In sports medicine, ultrasound is one of the most widely used therapeutic modalities, in addition to superficial heat and cold and electrical stimulation currents. It has been used for therapeutic purposes as a valuable tool in the rehabilitation of many different injuries, primarily for the purpose of stimulating the repair of soft tissue injuries and for pain relief.
Interferential Therapy (IF)
The basic principle of interferential therapy is to utilise the strong physiological effects of medium frequency electrical stimulation (250 Hz) of muscle and nerve and muscle tissues without the association of painful and somewhat unpleasant side effects of such stimulation. Interferential therapy controls swelling and pain and can improve circulation and healing time.
How Interferential Works
Using 2 or 4 rubber electrodes at specific points on the body, a medium electrical frequency of alternating current, which are slightly out of phase with each other, pass through the tissues. Where the current intersects, a new current is set up.
