Prevention
The GSR assists athletes in maintaining a high level of performance whilst minimising the risk of injury and/or illness. The GSR has a broad foundation of patho–physiological and medical knowledge, as well as excellent communication skills. The GSR can recognise the risks associated with injury and implement an appropriate plan to minimise the adverse effects. Is able to design and implement physical conditioning programmes. Have high levels of competency in design, performance and interpretation of pre – participation screening tests to identify any potential causes of injury.
Recognition, evaluation and assessment of an injury are skills critical to the role of a GSR. Understanding of the pathomechanics and predisposing factors of an injury assist the GSR in their assessment of the injury. Through appropriate clinical reasoning strategies, the GSR will formulate a clinical impression and an appropriate management plan for the injury in question.
Treatment, Rehabilitation and Reconditioning
The GSR has the knowledge and skills necessary to assess the status of injuries and from this information determine the appropriate treatment. The recovery of function and/or performance is facilitated through the administration of therapeutic exercise programmes and the use of electrotherapeutic and manual therapeutic modalities and techniques. Following the implementation of the treatment plan, the GSR has the skills to determine the need for treatment modification, continuation or discontinuation.
