Cold has its greatest benefit in acute athletic injury. There is general agreement that the use of cold is the initial treatment for most conditions in the musculoskeletal system.
The primary reason for using cold in acute injury is to lower the temperature in the injured area, thus reducing the metabolic with a corresponding decrease in production of metabolites and metabolic heat.
Cold is used in the acute phase of inflammatory conditions, such as bursitis, tenosynovitis, and tendinitis, in which heat may cause additional pain and swelling.
Cryotherapy is the use of cold in the treatment of acute trauma and sub–acute injury and for the decrease of discomfort after reconditioning and rehabilitation.
